Listen: Nicki Minaj Gets Deeply Cocky on 'Freedom'
Like too many rappers, Nicki's entered that phase in her young career in which most of her subject material is drawn directly from what she does for a living. Like her Cash Money colleagues Drake and Weezy, much of Minaj's more personal lyrical content touches on her dissatisfaction with the entertainment business, with all too familiar lines about how far she's made it and how isolating it can be at the top.
With a bunch of throwaway lines ("I'm ya idol, I'm ya idol, I'm ya motherf**kin' idol") and the rogue self-comparison to Jesus ("They'll never thank me for opening doors / But they ain't even thank Jesus when he died on the cross"), "Freedom" is far from Minaj's most interesting work. It does, however, shed light on who she is these days: A woman reveling in the peak of her cultural relevance.
What do you think of "Freedom"?
